"The 4th Dimension" (John McLaughlin, Etienne Mbappé, Gary Husband, Mark Mondésir) viennent d'enregistrer leur prochain disque, avec le nouveau bassiste du groupe Etienne Mbappé. L'album sortira au Printemps prochain en même temps que la tournée Européenne d'Avril-Mai sur le label Mediastarz. La liste des concerts est annoncée dans cette newsletter dans la rubrique Concerts. Le groupe visitera les plus grandes villes et festivals d'Europe.

Le band sera également en tour en Nov-Dec 2010, un tour proposé par notre partenaire américain Ted Kurland & Associates.


The 4th Dimension Band (John McLaughlin, Etienne Mbappé, Gary Husband, Mark Mondésir) were in studio at the end of November to record their new album, featuring the new bass player Etienne Mbappé. The album will be released for their European Tour in April-May 2010 (label Mediastarz). The list of concerts is announced in this newsletter in the Concerts Sections, we will attend the major cities and festivals in Europe.

The band will also tour in the US in Nov-Dec 2010, a tour booked by our US partner Ted Kurland & Associates.

(en collaboration avec BlueGeodesics)

C’est à l’occasion du Festival Jazz en Tête, à Clermont-Ferrand en Octobre dernier qu’est né ce duo magique entre Michel Portal et le guitariste béninois Lionel Loueke. On a découvert Lionel Loueke, auprès de Herbie Hancock ou de Terence Blanchard, mais aussi en tant que leader dans ses projets en trio ou en solo (disques disponibles sur les labels Space Time Records et Blue Note). C'est un formidable guitariste et vocaliste, avec une couleur musicale unique, une virtuosité et un sens de l'improvisation exceptionnels. Un partenaire idéal pour Michel Portal, qui reste toujours à l’écoute des jeunes musiciens du monde entier. Une page spéciale sur notre site sera réservée à ce duo, et vous permettre d’écouter un titre de leur concert à Clermont.

The first concert of this duet took place at Jazz en Tête’s festival in Clermont-Ferrand last October. Lionel Loueke, who has been touring with Herbie Hancock (and also started in Terence Blanchard’s band) is a wonderful guitarist from Benin. He is currently touring with his own trio, and also solo projects (records available on Space Time Records and Blue Note). He is an amazing musician (and singer too), with an unique musical color, a dazzling virtuosity, and an impressive improvisation’s ability. The perfect partner for Michel Portal, who is always listening to the young generations of musicians all over the world. A special page will be released on our website to listen to this wonderful duet (live in Clermont).

ACT signs Yaron Herman to worldwide exclusive contract
 
ACT president Siegfried Loch: “Ever since I heard this incredibly gifted piano player as a guest of Lars Danielsson, I was dreaming of signing him to my label. I can’t tell you how happy and proud I am that he is part of the ACT family now.”
 
Yaron Herman’s ACT debut is expected to be released in fall 2010.
 
About Yaron Herman:
 Yaron Herman was born on July 12th, 1981, in Tel Aviv, Israel. At 19, Yaron left for Boston where he planned to enroll at the Berklee College School of Music. He found it didn't satisfy his craving for knowledge and discovery and decided to return. On the way back to Tel Aviv he stopped over in Paris. That evening he met some musicians during a jam session and was given a contract the very next day. Soon he made a name for himself on the parisien musical scene. He never left Paris from then on. His  enthusiasm and talent, surprising in someone so young, meant that he quickly became the pianist that everyone was talking about with admiration and stupefaction.
 
Yaron Herman’s recording career started at the age of 21 with “Takes 2 to know 1”. In October 2005 he recorded his first piano solo album “Variations”. The album received particularly good reviews and Yaron Herman started to give his first solo performances in Europe, South America, the United States and China where he was the first Jazz pianist to play in the Forbidden City in Beijing. After more than a hundred solo concerts around the world, in 2007 Yaron Herman recorded his first trio album “A Time for Everything” along with Matt Brewer and Gerald Cleaver - a subtle blend of jazz, pop and his own personal compositions. The album received critical acclaim and was awarded “album of the year” by the French jazz magazines Jazzman and Jazz Magazine. In 2008, the trio toured Europe, the United States and Brazil with impressive results. At the same time Yaron Herman was working in collaboration with Michel Portal, Bertrand Chamayou, Lars Danielsson, Yael Naim and others, such as Dominic Miller, Sting's guitarist. Yaron Herman’s trio returned to the recording studio after having done numerous concerts together. This time they have invited a string quartet to play on their album “Muse”, which was released in March 2009.
 
Yaron Herman’s impressive and extensive schedule of concerts across the world, his popularity with younger audiences and his dazzling career to date confirm that he is an exceptional phenomenon, unique in the history of piano playing. Until today he won several awards, such as “Adami Jazz Talent” (2007), and “Victoires du Jazz” for best new instrumentalist of the year (2009).
 
In November 2009 Yaron Herman signed a worlwide exclusive contract with ACT. His debut on the new record label is expected to be released in fall 2010.

ACT founded by music producer and publisher Siegfried “Siggi” Loch in October 1992, is one of the preeminent independent record labels in jazz today. Announcing its presence in the market with the release of the critically acclaimed Jazzpaña that received two American Grammy nominations and a German Jazz Award, ACT’s remarkable success story quickly gathered momentum.

Home to some of the most exciting, stimulating and popular artists in jazz today, the label can look back on over 250 releases that embrace a wide range of jazz styles and have been presented with numerous awards for commercial achievement and artistic merit. Today ACT enjoys international acclaim for its innovative high quality jazz and world music, and the company is seen to be one of the top music suppliers in Europe. The ACT corporate design reflects Loch’s strong interest in visual art. An enthusiastic collector for more than 30 years, Loch has always looked to bridge the gap between music and visual art and many works from his collection have been used as cover art for the label’s releases.

"About half of the recordings on ACT were produced by myself based on original concepts and realized in cooperation with the artists of my choice. This is how I started in 1992 with the recording of Jazzpaña, with Arif Mardin, Vince Mendoza, Michael Brecker, Carles Benavent and Perico Sambeat”, Loch recalls. “It was followed by projects like Blue Corner with Jasper van't Hof (musical homages to eleven contemporary painters and their 'blue' artworks), Round About Bartók with Richie Beirach, Europeana with Michael Gibbs and Joachim Kühn, Swedish Folk Modern with Nils Landgren and Esbjörn Svensson and continuing the theme into 2007, we have Berlin Calling with Carsten Daerr. The other half of the ACT catalogue consists of recordings produced by the artists themselves whose vision of jazz I think deserved to be heard."

The label places a strong emphasis on artists from Scandinavia. Artists such as Nils Landgren, e.s.t. - Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Ulf Wakenius, Lars Danielsson or the singers Viktoria Tolstoy and Rigmor Gustafsson make ACT the most successful producer of Swedish jazz music.
Another significant focus for the label is German jazz, especially the support of promising young musicians. Indeed, one of Loch’s declared aims is to discover and support new talent. One of his most successful ventures has been the launch of the critically acclaimed Young German Jazz series in January 2005. “While listening to the young pianist Michael Wollny I decided to devote a whole new series of recording the Young German Jazz scene."

Siegfried Loch is a veteran of the business. He worked for the record majors until the end of the nineteen-eighties and discovered and produced big-name artists like Klaus Doldinger, The Rattles, Katja Ebstein, Amon Düül, Can, Heinz Rudolf Kunze, Marius Müller-Westernhagen and Al Jarreau – to name but a few. In 1998 Loch was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the German Association of Record Reviewers (Jahrespreis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik). His passion for jazz was inflamed by a Sidney Bechet concert that he witnessed as a teenager in Hannover. He entered the record industry when he was nineteen and quickly distinguished himself, becoming the manager of Liberty/United Artists in Germany at the age of 25, the youngest record boss in the business. He then became president of WEA-Germany (in 1971) and president of WEA-Europe (in 1982). But all the while he had nursed an ambition to have his own record label and finally, in 1992, ACT was born.

Über Yaron Herman:
Yaron Herman wurde am 12. Juli 1981 in Tel Aviv, Israel, geboren. Mit 19 Jahren geht er nach Boston, um an der Berklee College School of Music zu studieren. Das sehr wettbewerbsorientierte System dort steht aber in starkem Widerspruch zu seinem Bedürfnis nach Inspiration und individueller Erfüllung, sodass er sich schon nach zwei Monaten entschließt, nach Tel Aviv zurückzukehren. Die Musiker, die er bei einem Zwischenstopp in Paris während einer Jamsession kennen lernt, engagieren ihn sofort. Er bleibt in Paris und dank seines beeindruckenden Talents und seiner außergewöhnlichen Energie spricht bald die ganze Szene mit Bewunderung und Begeisterung von ihm.
 
Mit 21 Jahren nimmt Yaron Herman seine erste CD „Takes 2 to know 1“ auf. Im Oktober 2005 folgt sein erstes Klavier-Soloalbum “Variations”. Yaron Hermans Originalität und sein lyrischer Ansatz begeistern. Die Plattenkritiken sind enthusiastisch. Es folgen zahlreiche Solokonzerte in Europa, in Südamerika, in den USA und in China, wo er als erster Jazzpianist ein Konzert in Pekings „Verbotener Stadt“ gibt.
 
Nach über einhundert Solo-Konzerten weltweit geht Yaron Herman 2007 für seine erste Trio-Aufnahme „A Time for Everything“ mit Matt Brewer und Gerald Cleaver ins Studio. Subtil mischen sich Inspirationen von Pop und Jazz mit eigenen Kompositionen. Die CD wird von den beiden großen französischen Jazz-Zeitschriften Jazzman und Jazz Magazine zum Album des Jahres gewählt. Im Laufe des Jahres 2008 tritt das Trio mit beeindruckender Resonanz in Europa, in den USA und in Brasilien auf. Gleichzeitig entwickelt Yaron Herman musikalische Projekte und Freundschaften mit Michel Portal, Bertrand Chamayou, Lars Danielsson, Yaël Naïm und Dominic Miller, dem Gitarristen von Sting.
 
Im September 2008 gewinnt Yaron Herman den „Victoires du Jazz“ als bester neuer Instrumentalist des Jahres. Nach zahlreichen Konzerten geht das Trio zusammen mit dem Streichquartett „Quatuor Ebène“ wieder ins Studio: Das Album „Muse“ erscheint im März 2009 und wird begeistert aufgenommen.
 
Yaron Hermans beeindruckende, weltweite Konzert-Agenda, seine Popularität bei einem jüngeren Publikum und die atemberaubende Entwicklung seiner Karriere bestätigen, dass es sich bei ihm um ein einzigartiges Phänomen in der Geschichte des Klavierspiels handelt.
 
Im November 2009 schließt Yaron Herman einen weltweiten Exklusivvertrag mit ACT. Sein erstes Album auf dem neuen Label ist für Herbst 2010 geplant.

"Etwa die Hälfte aller Alben wurden von mir selbst produziert. Ich entwickle ein Konzept und suche dann dafür den richtigen Künstler. So entstand auch Jazzpaña, meine erste neue Produktion für das Label, die im Juli 1992 mit Arif Mardin, Vince Mendoza, Michael Brecker, Carles Benavent und Perico Sambeat aufgenommen wurde“, erinnert sich Loch. „Es folgten Projekte wie Blue Corner mit Jasper van't Hof (musikalische Hommagen an elf zeitgenössische Maler und ihre "blauen" Werke), Round about Bartók mit Richie Beirach, Europeana mit Michael Gibbs und Joachim Kühn, Swedish Folk Modern mit Nils Landgren und Esbjörn Svensson oder ganz aktuell Berlin Calling mit Carsten Daerr. Die andere Hälfte des ACT-Kataloges sind in Eigenregie produzierte Aufnahmen von Musikern, deren Vision ich teile und unterstütze.

Einer der Label-Schwerpunkte liegt auf Künstlern aus Skandinavien. Mit Musikern wie Nils Landgren, e.s.t. – Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Ulf Wakenius, Lars Danielsson oder den Sängerinnen Viktoria Tolstoy und Rigmor Gustafsson, ist ACT der erfolgreichste Produzent schwedischer Jazzmusiker.

Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt bilden deutsche Künstler, mit einem besonderen Augenmerk auf die Nachwuchsszene. In der Tat ist eines von Lochs erklärten Zielen die Entdeckung und Unterstützung neuer Talente. Eine seiner erfolgreichsten Unternehmungen der letzten Jahre ist die Reihe Young German Jazz, die im Januar 2005 startete. „Als ich den jungen Pianisten Michael Wollny zum ersten Mal spielen hörte, entschied ich mich, der jungen deutschen Jazzszene eine ganze Reihe zu widmen."

Siegfried Loch zählt zu den erfolgreichsten Managern des internationalen Musik-Business. Bis Ende der 80er Jahre war er im Major-Geschäft tätig und gilt als Entdecker und Produzent so berühmter Namen wie Klaus Doldinger, The Rattles, Katja Ebstein, Amon Düül, Can, Heinz Rudolf Kunze, Marius Müller-Westernhagen oder Al Jarreau – um nur einige zu nennen. Für sein Lebenswerk erhielt Loch 1998 den Jahrespreis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Entzündet wurde seine Jazz-Leidenschaft durch ein Konzert von Sidney Bechet, das er als Teenager in Hannover erlebte. Im Alter von 19 Jahren machte er seine ersten Schritte in der Musikindustrie, wurde mit 25 Jahren Deutschlands jüngster Schallplattenchef (Liberty/United Artists), daraufhin Geschäftsführer der WEA Deutschland (1971) und schließlich Präsident von WEA (Warner) - Europe (1982). Doch all die Jahre über hegte er den Wunsch, eines Tages sein eigenes Label zu gründen.

Tenacious is probably the adjective that best describes Stéphane Spira’s nature. He’s one of the rare French jazzmen to have started his career as a musician late in life. Now 43, he’s releasing his second album. In order to write this new page – dedicated to his father who passed away in 2007 – he invited Giovanni Mirabassi, a pianist with a stellar journey. The great complicity between these longstanding friends generates a climate that’s conducive to the work at hand. In it, Stéphane Spira reveals his love for composition and song, and confirms that he’s an artist endowed with a rare personality, just like his partner. John McLaughlin will record a new album at the end of November. The band will be the "'4th Dimension" with Etienne Mbappé (bass), Gary Husband (Keyboards, Drums) and Mark Mondésir (Drums). The album will be available for the Spring Tour in Europe on Mediastarz.



Jacky Terrasson just recorded his new album in New-York with Ben Williams (bass) who just won the Thelonious Monk Bass Competition, Jamire Williams (drums) and special guests, Gregoire Maret (harmonica), Jacques Schwartz-Bart (saxophone), and Cyro Baptista (percussions). Release Date Spring 2010 - Concord Jazz.

La phrase, à des variantes près, a été prononcée par tous les organisateurs de festival : "Vous verrez, ici, ce n'est pas comme ailleurs." A Ramatuelle, dimanche 16 août, ce fut le cas. Il est 0 h 30, et le pianiste Abdullah Ibrahim, né le 9 octobre 1934, au Cap, en Afrique du Sud, longue silhouette et visage de sphinx, se dandine, le regard doux et un beau sourire en écoutant Florence Tu Hong chanter Imagine, de John Lennon. En quartette, la jeune femme anime la nuit "off" de la première soirée du 24e Jazz Festival de Ramatuelle et Abdullah Ibrahim est au milieu du public, tel un enfant.

Le même public, à 21 h 20, avait accueilli, debout, le pianiste venu pour un concert unique en France, au Théâtre de verdure de Ramatuelle, avec ses colonnades et ses gradins façon antique. Le même public, deux heures plus tard, applaudit encore et encore Abdullah Ibrahim, le contrebassiste Belden Bullock et le batteur George Gray après une prestation magique, un voyage vers l'infini musical d'une élégance et d'une invention captivantes, vibrant d'une force intérieure que l'on pourrait appeler spiritualité. Il y aurait bien ici un esprit des lieux.
Le trio avait pourtant pris un peu de retard pour arriver aux réglages, en fin d'après-midi, du son et des lumières. Et le tour manager d'Abdullah Ibrahim, venu avec lui d'Allemagne - où le pianiste réside une partie de l'année partagée avec les Etats-Unis et l'Afrique du Sud -, avait compliqué les choses en demandant que personne ne soit présent en dehors des musiciens après s'être énervé du bruit de pas de l'un des responsables du plateau scénique susceptibles de déranger la concentration de son patron.
Dans un autre genre, c'était des complications dignes des moments qui ont précédés les concerts de Prince, la star du funk, à l'Opéra de Monte Carlo. Sauf que là, il est question d'une équipe de bénévoles tout dévoués au jazz, qui a vu passer sans accroc le Bottin mondain du jazz - Randy Weston, Lee Konitz, Oscar Peterson, John McLaughlin...
Mal engagée, l'histoire est devenue grand art. Un concert d'une traite, par lequel passent les compositions de toute une vie d'Abdullah Ibrahim : The Call, Excursions, Duke 88, Jubulani, For Coltrane, Blue Bolero... une bonne vingtaine de thèmes, parfois juste des bribes, que le pianiste trouve dans son cahier noir. Il en énonce quelques notes que ses compagnons reconnaissent tout de suite. Tout s'enchaîne sans que l'on perçoive ce qui relève de l'improvisé et du préparé - "Cela vient comme cela doit venir", dit plus tard Abdullah Ibrahim.
Beaucoup de tempos lents, des rythmes, des mélodies dans l'ancrage des musiques d'Afrique du Sud, des traces d'Orient et le jazz dans le rappel de ses deux frères de musique, Thelonious Monk, pour l'art de la retenue du plus exact moment, et Duke Ellington, pour l'aspect coloriste, impressionniste. Les notes d'Abdullah Ibrahim, ce soir-là, en fines gouttelettes, ont ouvert à tous les imaginaires.

Effervescence is a renewable resource for the pianist Jacky Terrasson. His playing can suggest a dazzling plenitude, all cascading fizz and chordal rumble, without any threshold of exhaustion. He always has more where that came from, and on a good night he can make it feel boisterously engaging: less like an arrangement of accumulated gestures than like a tidal surge of bright ideas, one crashing right after another.

Mr. Terrasson had a spectacularly good night on Thursday at the Iridium. His first set easily reached the high bar he set in the 1990s, when he was leading one of jazz’s freshest and most celebrated trios. His current trio — with the bassist Ben Williams and the drummer Jamire Williams, a pair of superbly responsive younger players whose only relation is musical — is now gathering just as much momentum, with its own style.
Groove, more than swing, propels that style, but in the most adaptable of ways. Thursday’s set began with Mr. Terrasson alone, maintaining a rippling tremolo with both hands. After a while he introduced a slow bass-clef vamp, moving incrementally out of his fog. It took just a moment before the theme came into focus: he was playing “Beat It,” in tribute to Michael Jackson, whose death had only just been confirmed.
There was no smirk onstage, nor the faintest snicker from the crowd: the sobriety of the performance was absolute. Gradually, though, Mr. Terrasson relaxed his elegiac tone and locked on a brisk tempo with bass and drums, adding the occasional stop-time syncopation. Fingers splayed, fluttering, Mr. Terrasson soon ducked into the jazz standard “Body and Soul,” still riding the same fluid pulse. He modulated through several keys before returning finally to his Jacksonian ode, and an air of quiet lamentation.
The churchlike harmonies of that coda made several more appearances in the set. One original, bearing the title “My Church,” began with serenely tolling chords, voiced to suggest prettiness in the high register and a flickering unrest below. (That flicker eventually led to flame, as the trio made strenuous sport of agitation.) And a gospel-esque slow-funk tune — Mr. Terrasson announced it as “Gaux Girl,” with a dedication to his daughter — evoked the earthier side of Keith Jarrett in the 1970s. (It so happens Mr. Terrasson now has the same hairstyle that Mr. Jarrett did then, and a similar habit of groaning as he plays.)
Mr. Terrasson’s leadership was always clear, but his partners hardly seemed subservient: their playing was assertive and flexible, reflecting a full command of hip-hop rhythmic inflection. Crucially, they also share Mr. Terrasson’s fundamentals: both Williamses sounded right at home on “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To,” a dash of swinging post-bop that arrived precisely when it was needed, and not a moment too soon.

Voilà un site à garder dans ses favoris, depuis quelques mois, notre ami Pierre de Chocqueuse (écrivain et journaliste à Jazzman et grand spécialiste des pianistes à nos yeux) écrit dans son blog « Blog de Choc » toutes ses bonnes notes (qu’il prend minutieusement pendant les concerts), chronique les sorties de disques, agrémentés de ses photos, un contenu très vivant, sympathique et très agréable à lire. Le blog est bien ficelé, avec une syndication RSS qui permet d’être averti des nouvelles publications. Chaleureusement recommandé.

Avec sa permission, le compte-rendu du concert de Jacky Terrasson lors de son passage à Paris au Sunside :

Depuis lundi, Jacky Terrasson occupe le Sunside. Il s’y sent chez lui et invente soir après soir en solo. Le blues nourrit ses lignes mélodiques, mais Jacky utilise un vocabulaire harmonique très varié dont les racines plongent aussi dans la musique classique européenne. On ne sait jamais ce qu’il va jouer. Lui non plus. Une belle page romantique succède à un prélude dissonant. De notes puissamment martelées sort une mélodie de rêve, une miniature sonore aussi fugace que belle. Tel un magicien, Jacky tire de son chapeau un splendide Over the Rainbow et lui imprime un doux balancement. La main droite, légère, ornemente, en détache sensuellement les notes essentielles. Un vieux blues bancal et burlesque introduit You’ve Got a Friend de Carole King. Take the A Train hérite d’un tempo lent et chaloupé. Une composition sans titre se mâtine de rythmes afro-cubains. Les doigts font danser les notes, leur imposent des cadences hypnotiques. Après un Caravan très percussif, le deuxième set de la soirée célèbre longuement le blues. Jacky en esquisse les phrases, leur donne rythme et respiration avant d’en bousculer les accords dans un jeu très physique. Les notes se font puissantes, gonflent et s’étalent comme des vagues. Celles de I Love you More, une ultime ballade, apaisent et mettent en joie.
