Le Label ACT est distribué par Harmonia Mundi en France.

C’est à l’occasion du Festival Jazz en Tête, à Clermont-Ferrand en Octobre dernier qu’est né ce duo magique entre Michel Portal et le guitariste béninois Lionel Loueke. On a découvert Lionel Loueke, auprès de Herbie Hancock ou de Terence Blanchard, mais aussi en tant que leader dans ses projets en trio ou en solo (disques disponibles sur les labels Space Time Records et Blue Note). C'est un formidable guitariste et vocaliste, avec une couleur musicale unique, une virtuosité et un sens de l'improvisation exceptionnels. Un partenaire idéal pour Michel Portal, qui reste toujours à l’écoute des jeunes musiciens du monde entier. Une page spéciale sur notre site sera prochainement réservée à ce duo, et vous permettre d’écouter un titre de leur concert à Clermont.

The first concert of this duet took place at Jazz en Tête’s festival in Clermont-Ferrand last October. Lionel Loueke, who has been touring with Herbie Hancock (and also started in Terence Blanchard’s band) is a wonderful guitarist from Benin. He is currently touring with his own trio, and also solo project (records available on Space Time Records and Blue Note). He is an amazing musician (and singer too), with an unique musical color, a dazzling virtuosity, and an impressive improvisation’s ability. The perfect partner for Michel Portal, who is always listening to the young generations of musicians all over the world. Tenace est l’adjectif qui définit probablement le plus justement le caractère de Stéphane Spira. Un des rares jazzmen français à avoir commencé une carrière de musicien sur le tard. Aujourd’hui à 43 ans il publie son deuxième album. Pour écrire cette nouvelle page - dédiée à son père disparu en 2007 - il a convié Giovanni Mirabassi, pianiste au parcours étincelant. Amis de longue date, leur étroite connivence engendre un climat intime propice à l’ouvrage. Stéphane Spira y révèle son amour de la composition et du chant et confirme qu’il est un artiste doté d’une rare personnalité, tout comme son partenaire.

La réussite première de « Spirabassi » tient d’abord au fait que le dialogue est ici, au fil des plages, parfaitement équilibré. Sans la moindre tentative de prise de pouvoir de l’un comme de l’autre. Seule compte ici la libre prise de parole à deux voix. « Il y a comme une magie, confesse Stéphane, qui s’est opérée entre nous lors de l’enregistrement. Giovanni par son jeu tout en fluidité chantante, très loin de celui d’un simple accompagnateur, a su me mettre en valeur. De la même manière, ma musique et mes compositions ont cherché à lui permettre de s’exprimer avec le plus de liberté possible.» Le pari de l’interaction triomphante est ici totalement gagné. ! Pour tout résumer en une seule phrase, Cioran, une nouvelle fois, a trouvé la formule magique : « Seule la musique peut créer une complicité indestructible entre deux personnes »

Tenacious is probably the adjective that best describes Stéphane Spira’s nature. He’s one of the rare French jazzmen to have started his career as a musician late in life. Now 43, he’s releasing his second album. In order to write this new page – dedicated to his father who passed away in 2007 – he invited Giovanni Mirabassi, a pianist with a stellar journey. The great complicity between these longstanding friends generates a climate that’s conducive to the work at hand. In it, Stéphane Spira reveals his love for composition and song, and confirms that he’s an artist endowed with a rare personality, just like his partner.

The prime success of «Spirabassi» is based on the fact that the dialogue is perfectly balanced throughout the tracks. Neither of them ever tries to take over. The only thing that counts is the two-voice speech. Stéphane confesses, «It was as if a certain magic took place between us during the recording. Giovanni, through his singing fluidity far removed from that of a simple accompanist, presented himself to best advantage. Likewise, my music and compositions aimed to enable him to express himself as freely as possible.» The challenge of the triumphant interaction is here completely overcome! To sum it all up in one sentence, Cioran, once again, found a magical expression: «Only music can ever create an indestructible bond between two people.»
